1 out of 5 stars The birds will not eat it.   September 1, 2010

Stokes Select STK5137-07 Cardinal Songbird Select birdseed is the worst seed I have ever bought. The birds won't
come near it and it certainly didn't attract any songbirds. Even my cardinals would not touch it. I don't know if it was moldy or what the problem was, but my husband has thrown it in the garbage. What a waste of money!!!!

Over the last year I went through a 25lb bag of somewhat junky birdseed at one of my feeders and got mostly house sparrows and squirrels at it. Cardinals were landing at the feeder and then flying off without eating so I figured I would not buy again. I decided to try something advertising itself as premium to get less millet and other chaff in hopes some other birds would show up.

I filled the feeder with this seed on Sunday and since then have seen House finches, Gold finches, Chickadees and Creepers at the feeder, none of which had turned up at all over the last year. I think the higher amount of sunflower seeds did the trick. Most of these birds have been coming to my thistle feeders and ignoring the feeder I tried the seed in for the last year or so. Not seeing quite as many squirrels since the sparrows don't shovel out so much wasted millet.

Still can't keep the stupid European house sparrows off the feeder though. Ugh.

I really hope that some cardinals find the feeder and enjoy it. If so, will definitely buy again in higher volume. I recommend buying the 7lb bag and trying it out at your feeder to see if you are getting the birds you are looking for.

Doesn't seem to be attracting anything yet. I will udpate my review if that changes when colder weather arrives.

update: the birds have found the food and it got eaten pretty quickly by some sparrows. Nothing more colorful than that yet. Will save the rest of the seed until it gets colder and then see if we attract something more interesting.

This was part of a gift along with a bird feeder. Reportedly cardinals are drawn to the food.

5 out of 5 stars Pricey, but premium bird seed.   March 10, 2008

Just purchased a bird feeder. Had no idea the birds went through seed so quickly. I bought this brand because it said it attracted a wide variety of birds. It got eaten rather quickly, and we bought an economical bird seed but was not as good as this first package. This brand did not leave a lot of shells on the ground, whereas the value brand did. I highly recommend this bird seed, keeping in mind that it is not the cheapest alternative out there.
