Product Description Unlike most other suet feeders, when the suet compartment metal plate is in place, the Suet Palace keeps squirrels, pesky Starlings and Grackles from eating the suet. When this feeder is hung high from the ground, Grackles and Starlings don t often feed at this style of feeder so you can take the plate out. Now, large Woodpeckers like Flickers, Sapsuckers, Red Headed, Red Bellied, and even Pileated Woodpeckers can hang from the bottom and feed. Holes on the sides are 1.5 inches X 1.5 inches and the bottom is .5 inches X .5 inches. Suet cake size is 4.5 x 3 x 4. 7.00 inches tall x 9.50 inches long x 11.00 inches wide

Not so squirrel resistant August 24, 2010 L. Anton (New York) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I tried hanging this in various different places and the squirrels always managed to get into it and eat all the suet. The birds loved it and I did get a downy woodpecker to eat from it but I had to replace the suet every few days. Good bird feeder and excellent squirrel feeder.
It really is squirrel proof! August 16, 2010 T. Belt (Tipp City, Ohio United States) We have had problems in the past with the squirrels eating the suet before the birds had a chance to feast. With this feeder, the problem is solved. The bottom of the middle section has a metal plate that is optional to keep the squirrels from eating out of that section. There are no instructions that tell you that this is the purpose of this piece of metal. We tried the feeder without the plate in place and, sure enough, the squirrels found a way to eat from this section. We wired the metal piece into place because when the suet was nearly gone, the feeder could be tipped and the metal plate moved enough to gain access to the suet. As it is now, our birds are happy and our squirrels have given up trying to get at the suet.
Finally-the birds are starting to go in to palace. May 27, 2010 Betty Boop (New York, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Finally after 3 weeks SEVERAL woodpeckers and a tufted titmouse went inside the outer caged area to get to the suet. Hope more birds do the same as I have two all season suets in there and don't want them to go to waste. Took the birds a while to get the idea. Grackles cannot enter but one did get stuck.
Starling problem.....SOLVED!!!! May 21, 2010 MRDUCKS (Oregon) The feeder worked great right out of the box. A few VERY determined starlings could still reach the corners of the suet cake by hanging upside down. I solved that problem by cutting a piece of 8x9 inch sheet metal, drilled 2 holes on each corner and tie-wrapped it to the bottom of the feeder. 2 suet cakes are too much at one time, so I chilled a cake, cut it in half, put it in the suet basket and put a wedge of wood between them to hold them tight up against the suet basket.
I highly recommend this product!!!!!
Almost perfect February 17, 2010 D. Ingram 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I don't have a problem with squirrels. Starlings, however, have been a major nightmare in my efforts to feed birds. This suet feeder is the most effective I have had in keeping out starlings. There is a metal plate that is optional for you to place under the suet cakes to prevent starlings from hanging on the bottom and going hog wild. Despite what many bird "experts" will tell you, starlings can and do hang upside down in order to get to food. I've had downy and hairy woodpeckers, nuthatches, wrens and chickadees feed without any problems. My only complaint is that the cage around the suet container should have been about two inches wider on all sides. Starlings cannot get inside the cage and with the bottom plate they cannot feed from the bottom, however, I've had a couple of very determined starlings stretch themselves as far as they can through the opening enough that they get a few mouths full. This design does deter most of them and it's squirrel proof, I just wish it were a little better.
