5 out of 5 stars Squirrels are fun to feed now.   February 6, 2008

This feeder is a quality product that arrives fully assembled. With the turn of a screw the amount of seeds that are dispensed each time a squirrel pulls at the bar can be adjusted. The feeder includes a metal post and screws to secure the feeder onto a fence/deck post or tree if you prefer that to hanging it. I'd think it'd be a big challenge for a squirrel to balance himself on the feeder tray if the feeder was hanging, unless there was something nearby to steady his body with. 'Our' squirrels sit in the tray to eat, though the surface is slick and not very big.

It doesn't take long for each squirrel to figure out how to get seeds to dispense. One squirrel at a time sits and eats until another comes along and challenges for his turn. After awhile you get to know the individual squirrels by appearance (if you care to). Depending on how many squirrels you have in your area, you could be filling this feeder often. There are four squirrels in this area and they'll empty the feeder of its sunflower seeds in two days and that may be at the minimum setting.

It's suggested in the instructions to place the squirrel feeder 20 feet away from your bird feeders. I'm not sure if that means all bird feeders, or only those bird feeders that aren't squirrel proof, so we put it 10 feet away. We've had the squirrel feeder for about five days but only put the squirrel-proof bird feeder up two days ago. So far no birds have come to their feeder. The squirrels have tried it, but gave up quickly. (Why bother when there's a sure thing 10 feet away.) Two days isn't a lot of time for birds to get used to seeing a feeder out there, but it could be the squirrels are keeping them away.
